Lindisfarne

February 2000

Dawn on the beach facing Lindisfarne castle - Tudor fort, remodelled as residence by Edwin Lutyens, 1903, with a walled garden in the sheep pasture by Gertrude Jekyll.

Lytton Strachey, who stayed at Lindisfarne in 1918 - "very dark, with nowhere to sit, and nothing but stone under, over and round you".

Lutyens went on to spend 20 years on the design of New Delhi - "They want me to do Hindu. Hindon't, I say."
