portraiture #5

John Duchie

John's picture is one of a series I took in my dorm during Cafe Night (a talent show of sorts). All of the pictures were taken during or immediately after performing. Although none of the performances entailed acting. I was just another member of the audience, but somehow the images seem much more striking in their individuality and complexity.

In other words, they seem much more engaging.

I thought this was interesting because it completely comfounds the previous theoretical work I had done regarding relaxing my friends and trying to get them to "be themselves." Also, unlike my previous pictures I did not momentarily detract them from their activities. John's particular stance in the image is really intense with the slightly forward shoulder holding the bow. That with his facial expression makes it seem almost like a weapon of sorts. And yet his right hand is still letting the viola down after playing an amazingly beautiful song. The black piano seems to compliment the musical aspect of this image. The shadows in the upper corners and striking light does a lot for the intense, slightly ominous mood.
