Along with the 150 workmen (on average) enlisted in the 1872 excavations at Troy, Schliemann was able to displace great quantities of debris (over 250,000 cubic meters in three years) with the further recruitment of 6 horse carts, 10 handcarts mounted upon a rail line and 88 wheelbarrows. In all, the action of this army was further mediated by the knowledge of a railroad engineer.
