The fate of the drowned

A memorial to the desaparecidos in the University of Catamarca, Argentina.

Desaparecido means "disappeared". 30,000 people disappeared during the time of military rule in Argentina, between 1976 and 1983. They were abducted, tortured and killed. The corpses of thousands have still not been recovered. Each stela in Catamarca has the name of a desaparecido, with the date of his or her disappearance.
Speaking about Nazi concentration camps, Primo Levi wrote that true witnesses are those who never returned. The stelae of Catamarca bear the impossible testimony of the drowned.
