A case of the success of international cooperation in the return of looted cultural property. This mural collection at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is the largest collection of murals from the prehispanic city of Teotihuacan outside of Mexico. The murals were illegally removed from the walls of the Techinantitla palace/apartment compound in the late 1960s and became part of the private collection of Harald Wagner. Upon his death they were bequeathed to the Fine Arts Museums and a cooperative agreement was reached with the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) to return half of the murals to Mexico.
